User percentile vs. nationally representative percentile.

College Board actually publishes two different percentile tables for every SAT score, and they don't match. The user percentile compares your score against the students who actually took the SAT in the past few years. The nationally representative percentile is a statistical projection — built with U.S. Census data — of how your score would compare against every U.S. college-bound student, including the ones who never sat for the exam. Because students who register for the SAT are, on average, more college-bound and better prepared than the general population, user percentiles tend to run a bit lower than nationally representative ones at the same score.

The calculator above shows user percentiles, approximated from College Board's most recently published tables and reviewed annually as those tables are updated. For the official methodology and both percentile tables side by side, see College Board's Understanding Scores guide.

If you don't have a scaled score yet, start with the SAT score calculator to convert your raw section scores to a 400–1600 total, then come back here to see where it ranks. And once you know your percentile, the SAT score goal calculator will show exactly how many questions you can afford to miss to hit a higher one.

Frequently asked questions.

Is 1200 a good SAT score?

A 1200 lands in the 76th percentile, meaning it beats about 76 out of 100 test takers and sits well above the national median. It's a competitive score at most state schools and a solid foundation to build from if you're targeting more selective colleges.

What percentile is 1400?

A 1400 is roughly the 94th percentile — it outperforms about 94 out of 100 test takers. That makes it a strong, highly competitive score outside the most selective admissions tier.

What SAT score is the 99th percentile?

Based on the benchmark table above, a score of 1560 or higher lands in the 99th percentile in our tables — the top 1% of test takers. Scores from 1500–1550 sit just below that, in the upper-90s percentiles.

What's the average SAT score?

College Board reports the national mean SAT score at roughly 1050 each cycle. In our percentile table, 1050 corresponds to about the 53rd percentile — close to the middle of the distribution, which is what "average" means in practice.
